The name A-OK says that “A” as in Autism is OK, and nothing to be ashamed of. A-OK wants to help children to see the gifts they may posses rather that always focusing on the difficulties. The decision to make the name somewhat ambiguous comes from a need to respect the children’s privacy. Although A-OK believes there is no shame in autism, it is widely misunderstood, and a certain amount of stigmatization still remains. We at A-OK believe that there is so much more to people than labels and wants to encourage the view that our kids are unique individuals rather than a diagnosis.
We believe the child is a gift to this world, preferring Autism Spectrum Disorder to be seen as Autism Spectrum Difference.
